Lohum Set To Recycle Expired EV Batteries For Tork Motors

The long-term contract involves gathering and recycling lithium-ion batteries from Tork’s Kratos R electric motorcycles when they reach the end of their lifespan.

Lohum, a player in sustainable energy transition through battery recycling, low-carbon refining, and battery repurposing, has forged a strategic alliance with Tork Motors, a prominent electric motorcycle manufacturer. This extensive agreement focuses on the collection and recycling of used lithium-ion batteries from Tork’s renowned Kratos R electric motorcycles. The Kratos R is equipped with a 9kW ‘Axial Flux’ motor, boasting a high efficiency of 96% and a peak torque of 38 Nm. It is complemented by a 4.0 kWh Li-ion battery pack, rated IP67 for durability, which enables an IDC range of 180km.

Under this pact, Lohum will apply its DETX-weighted future battery buyback price index to repurpose Tork Motors’ lithium-ion batteries, utilizing its innovative NEETM multi-stage hydro-metallurgical process at the ‘Reclaim’ facility in Greater Noida.

Registered as an R4 recycler under India’s Battery Waste Management Rules (BWMR 2022), Lohum not only champions circularity in EV battery manufacturing but also promotes a closed-loop system for EV battery OEMs. This collaboration aligns with the shared vision of Lohum and Tork Motors to propel India’s EV revolution and energy transition, simultaneously reducing reliance on primary ecosystem battery materials, which are often associated with significant environmental and humanitarian costs.

Chetan Jain, the Senior VP of Business Operations at Lohum, expressed his views on the partnership, highlighting its role in enhancing electric vehicle (EV) adoption across India’s extensive two-wheeler sector. He pointed out that this collaboration is pivotal in providing a consistent supply of recycled materials for energy transition, utilizing the existing inventory.

Kapil Shelke, the founder and CEO of Tork Motors, addressed the wider aspects of sustainability. He noted that sustainability goes beyond just reducing emissions and being environmentally friendly in the short term. He stressed the importance of considering the recycling of batteries at the end of their lifecycle, particularly in the realm of electric vehicles. He remarked that proactive planning for the future is essential and that the alliance with Lohum is a key step in maintaining their commitment to sustainability and creating a lasting, positive environmental impact.
