Monday, September 16, 2013: Taking a step ahead in making solar technology accessible for commoners, the Mahindra Group now has plans to sell solar powered home appliances. According to a Business Line report, the company has announced its plans to enter into the retailing of solar power based home appliances. These appliances will essentially target the rural markets of the country.
The group is trying to bank on that fact that it is already a popular name in the country and this popularity will particularly help it grow in the rural areas courtesy its flagship company, Mahindra & Mahindra, that sells its tractors.
The group has also created a new brand tag called the ‘Mahindra Ekosol’ for its line of solar powered home appliances. The Business Line quoted Sanjeev Malik, Business-Head, Mahindra Ekosol, saying, “The group kicks off the solar products business with five product lines — lanterns, home lighting systems, inverters, water pumps and street lighting systems. All these have been designed exclusively for Mahindra Ekosol and they would be manufactured for Mahindra by selected vendors.”
Malik revealed that Mahindra Ekosol is a business division of Mahindra EPC Services Pvt Ltd, but will have a separate balance-sheet. The parent company is already a big name in the large-scale solar power plants.
