Microsoft Working on Cheaper, Disc-less Xbox One for Release in 2019

Microsoft is apparently building a disc-less version of its Xbox One home console that may cost $200 or less. The company plans to release it next year.

Microsoft is reportedly working on a new console in the Xbox One family that could be much cheaper than the existing models.

According to a new report from blogger Paul Thurrott, the company plans to release a discless, entry-level Xbox One next year. The device will not be part of the long-rumoured Scarlett family, Microsoft’s next-gen consoles.

Thurrott report suggests that Microsoft is looking to price the new machine at $200 or less, lowering that current price by almost $100. Currently, Xbox One devices officially start at $299.

Those who have a large collection of physical discs for their current Xbox need not to worry. In addition to the new console, there will be a ‘disc-to-digital’ program that turns your physical games into digital downloads. For that you need to take your disc to a participating retailer (like the Microsoft store) and trade in your disc for a digital download.

Updated version of Xbox One S expected later this year

Microsoft is also apparently working on an updated version of Xbox One S for those that still prefer to buy physical discs. The company plans to release it later in the year.

However, Microsoft is yet to decide whether or not Xbox Scarlett will feature a disc drive.

Microsoft, which  first unveiled the Xbox One in 2013, is investing heavily in its Xbox brand and announced the acquisition of a couple of new gaming studios over the weekend.

While the news about Microsoft’s disc-less version of its Xbox One home console is doing the rounds, Sony has announced that it will not be taking part in E3 2019, the world’s biggest gaming trade show held annually in Los Angeles.

It will be the first time in E3’s 24 year history that Sony will not be attending the show. The company will not be holding its traditional pre-show press conference, nor will it be on the E3 show floor at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Sony’s decision for no-show at E3 2019 has given rise to speculation that the company plans to announce the PlayStation 5 next year, rumoured for release in 2020.
