Mitsubishi Reveals New Electric SUV for North America

Set to arrive in summer 2026, Mitsubishi’s Eclipse Sportback EV will become a central part of the carmaker’s North American growth and electrification roadmap.

Mitsubishi Motors has confirmed that its upcoming Eclipse Sportback EV will enter the North American market as a 2027 model-year vehicle, with deliveries expected to begin during the second half of 2026. The electric compact SUV will be sourced from alliance partner Nissan Motor Co. and will be based on the latest generation of the Nissan Leaf.

The announcement forms part of Mitsubishi’s broader Momentum 2030 business strategy, which focuses on expanding the company’s vehicle portfolio in North America, increasing electrification, modernising retail operations and strengthening its dealer network.

While Mitsubishi has yet to disclose detailed specifications, pricing or a confirmed launch date, the company stated that additional information will be released closer to market introduction.

The Eclipse Sportback EV is the production model of an electric vehicle (EV) Mitsubishi first indicated would arrive in summer 2026. According to the company, the SUV will feature styling elements consistent with Mitsubishi’s global vehicle range, including distinctive front and rear lighting signatures and alloy wheel designs.

The model revives the Eclipse nameplate, which has been part of Mitsubishi’s North American portfolio since 1990. The company also linked the vehicle to its earlier EV efforts, including the i-MiEV, which debuted in several markets in 2009 before reaching the US and Canada in 2011. Production of the i-MiEV ended after the 2017 model year.

Because the Eclipse Sportback EV shares its platform with the redesigned 2026 Nissan Leaf, it could benefit from technologies already featured in Nissan’s latest electric vehicle. The Leaf offers an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 303 miles when equipped with its 75-kWh battery pack.

The Eclipse Sportback EV will join Mitsubishi’s existing electrified offerings, including the Outlander plug-in hybrid. The company also confirmed plans to introduce a more rugged, off-road-focused version of the Outlander SUV in early 2027.

Mitsubishi said its North American vehicle line-up is expected to nearly double between fiscal years 2026 and 2030, indicating that additional new models are planned as part of its long-term growth strategy.
