The initiative seeks to educate more than 10,000 mechanics on skills for maintaining and repairing electric vehicles.

Automotive lubricant maker Motul India has partnered with direct-to-consumer electric vehicle (EV) brand Zypp Electric to launch a nationwide training program for mechanics, focusing on electric two-wheeler repair and maintenance. The initiative began with a two-day pilot training session in Gurugram, aiming to certify over 10,000 mechanics across India as EV repair specialists. This strategic collaboration leverages Motul India’s expertise in automotive maintenance and Zypp Electric’s operational insights into electric two-wheelers, seeking to empower mechanics by enhancing their skills for servicing both internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles.

The inaugural program featured a blend of theoretical and hands-on training, where mechanics learned about EV electrical systems, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and practical skills essential for maintaining and repairing electric two-wheelers. Feedback from participants and dealer partners highlighted the program’s relevance, noting a significant improvement in EV repair knowledge among mechanics, with some reporting up to a 50% increase.

Nagendra Pai, CEO of Motul India & South Asia, emphasised that this initiative is part of Motul’s broader ambitions in the mobility industry, which include sectors like EV, retrofitting to EV, hydrogen technologies, thermal management, and immersed battery technology. He highlighted that beyond upskilling, the program aims to empower mechanics to create new avenues for growth and earnings.

Akash Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO of Zypp Electric commented on the significance of this initiative for India, a fast-growing market where booming e-commerce demands substantial logistics expertise. He noted that the EV ecosystem requires numerous grassroots interventions, and training the workforce is a critical aspect. Gupta affirmed that partnering with Motul India in this training initiative aligns perfectly with Zypp Electric’s mission to build a sustainable EV last-mile delivery ecosystem.

The partnership between Motul India and Zypp Electric marks a significant step in bridging the skills gap in India’s evolving automotive landscape. By equipping mechanics with skills in both ICE and EV technologies, the initiative ensures they remain competitive and adaptable in the rapidly changing vehicle ecosystem.
