Wednesday, December 17, 2014: While drawing efforts towards power conservation, Akhilesh Yadav government has adapted several steps to make efficient use of resources. The municipal level together with the department of urban development has asked local bodies to utilise renewable sources like solar energy to energise street lights and water supply in the state.
Executive officers of nagar palika and parishads noted that the consumers are spending heavily on electricity consumption. They said that it can be corrected only via use of renewable energy. Secretary, urban development, Sri Prakash Singh told TOI, that the municipal corporation and other local bodies, with the help of agencies, will install solar powered street lights and high mast lamps.
He, further, said that this will not only bring down the power consumption, but will also encourage the use of renewable energy. The department in the directive said that the usage of solar powered lights should follow the standards set up by Union ministry of renewable energy. The department has gone throw much criticism over wastage of electricity through street lights.
Azam Khan, urban development minister, had asked the municipal commissioners to make sure that the street lights are switched off during the day time, else they will consider deduction from their salaries. However, even after that many complaints of electricity wastage have poured in.
