Natron Announces Sodium-ion Battery Plant With An Annual Capacity of 24GWh in North Carolina

Natron is anticipating to produce cells up to 50,000 charge-discharge cycles with 5x more longeivity than traditional lithium-ion batteries.

The United States of America (USA) has now embarked on another journey to lead the global value chain in battery manufacturing. In order to meet the same, Natron Energy announces to invest $1.4 billion to set-up a new sodium-ion battery manufacturing plant in North Carolina. According to the company, the factory will be furnished with the capacity of producing batteries similar to other Chinese companies.

Natron plans to build the plant with a yearly capacity of 24GWh in Edgecombe County. The project is expected to turn Natron into one of the leading sodium-ion battery manufacturers in the world. When asked about Natron’s’ intention to focus only on sodium-ion batteries, the spokesperson added that unlike the traditional Li-ionpacks, sodium-ion batteries have better longevity and they are safe and cost-effective.

Speaking about the global growth and production of sodium-ion batteries, China has a production capacity of 95 percent. Billions of dollars of investments were made in research and development by the Chinese government. The market in the USA is expecting to grow at a CAGR of 18.9 percent from 2024 to 2030.

China, known as the global leader in battery manufacturing, has been reported to use these batteries in grid-level energy storage systems of local commodities. The electric vehicle industry is now actively looking to replace lithium-ion batteries with sodium-ion. Therefore, it has a huge potential in contributing to the macroeconomics of the country. 

Along with Natron, Bedrock, Acculon Energy is expected to invest billions of dollars in this emerging market with a plan to replace China as the leader in battery manufacturing. China, on the other hand, has already unleashed the globe’s first large-scale energy storage plant. In an interaction with a US based media, Spencer Gore, CEO of Bedrock Materials has stated that the US will produce sodium-ion batteries exponentially in the coming five years. Within China, there are a lot of companies who are manufacturing cells and materials on some scale, but outside China, the production is very limited. 

Natron is anticipating to produce cells up to 50,000 charge-discharge cycles. It implies that it will have 5x more longevity than the traditional li-ion batteries. The seamless flow of sodium-ion also means that around 15 minutes are required for a full charge. Moreover, it also allows wide operating temperatures, which ranges from 32 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit (0 to 45 degrees Celsius).
