Finnish gear maker, Nokia has started making 5G equipment in its Chennai manufacturing unit to boost 5G ecosystem and Make in India
Nokia has started manufacturing 5G equipment in its Chennai facility which is currently focusing on producing New Radio (NR) based on the 3GPP 5G New Radio Release 15 standard. Amit Marwah, head of marketing and corporate affairs at Nokia has informed that the gear maker is also looking at producing IP and Optics product lines in India.
The Finnish company, reportedly, has plans to explore the fixed network products segment provided the demand increases over time. Sanjay Malik, senior vice president and head India Market, Nokia said that the company was moving forward contributing to the country’s ‘Make in India’ dream of producing goods in India.
Nokia’s Chennai facility
The equipment manufacturing facility ships products to more than 100 nations. Its capacity increased to about 4 million 2G, 3G and 4G units annually. It recently launched its first Smart manufacturing application of Industry 4.0 in association with BSNL that included Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), connected Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analytics, and the Internet of Things to increase efficiency.
Nokia 5G deals
Nokia has bagged several deals by telecom operators in the US. The gear maker will be working with US-based T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon for 5G equipment. It acquired a$3.5 billion 5G network deal from T-Mobile. In India, it started producing telecom equipment from 2008 and the network had expanded over the years.
With the increase in the consumption of data, the company is eyeing major developments in the country by contributing to billions of connected devices in the coming years. Nokia believes that 5G NR will extend its support to telecom providers to increase network capacity, higher user throughput and lower latency with increased network reliability.
