Nuvoton and ITRI partner around the NuMicro® M55M1 AI MCU to deliver affordable, practical edge AI across industries.
Nuvoton Technology has partnered with Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute to accelerate adoption of edge artificial intelligence across industries, centred on the NuMicro® M55M1 AI MCU. The collaboration aims to deliver integrated hardware software edge AI solutions that allow manufacturing, smart buildings and healthcare sectors to deploy AI in a usable, manageable and affordable manner, bringing intelligence directly into frontline equipment and operations.
Aligned with initiatives of the National Science and Technology Council and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the partnership supports Taiwan’s Smart System Integration and Manufacturing Platform and the broader vision of building the island into an AI driven economy. Following ITRI’s core AI pillars of data, computing power and algorithms, Nuvoton has modularised its toolchains, AI models and development boards, while working with ITRI to establish a TinyML micro computing platform. This approach lowers entry barriers for small and medium sized enterprises, enabling faster proof of concept development and scalable deployment.
At the centre of the collaboration is the entry level NuMicro® M55M1 AI MCU, which integrates an Arm Cortex M55 core with an Arm Ethos U55 micro NPU, delivering around 110 GOP per second for common AI inference tasks. With on chip memory and expandable support, the device enables real time, low power and offline AI processing at the edge.
Initial applications will focus on edge inspection in manufacturing, people flow detection and energy optimisation in smart buildings, and posture and fall detection in medical and long term care. By leveraging Taiwan’s strong hardware software ecosystem, Nuvoton and ITRI aim to accelerate practical AI deployment and industrial value creation across sectors.
