Ola Develops Solid-State Batteries, Cuts EV Costs

Ola Electric solidifies its hold in the Indian electric two-wheeler market with increased production, locally built battery cells, and solid-state battery technology.

Ola Electric, an electric two-wheeler manufacturer, has forged a strategic collaboration with Beijing’s Welion New Energy, a solid-state battery manufacturer. This partnership is set to establish a solid-state battery manufacturing sector for Ola Electric’s EVs. The company also plans to kick off the commercial production of solid-state batteries at its battery production ‘gigafactory’ in Tamil Nadu next year.

Currently, Ola Electric relies on LG Energy Solutions in South Korea and Contemporary Amperex Technology to source its cells. However, this new partnership with Beijing’s Welion New Energy is expected to significantly boost local sales manufacturing, reduce EV costs, and generate thousands of job opportunities within the country. This promising development is a clear sign of India’s potential for economic growth in the EV sector.


Solid-state batteries, with their ability to cover a range of up to 1,000 km and innovative ‘battery-swapping services ‘, are poised to transform the EV industry. This unique service allows users to quickly replace their depleted batteries with fully charged ones, eliminating the need for long charging times. These batteries also offer improved safety, longer life span and faster charging facilities than conventional lithium-ion batteries, which use flammable liquid electrolytes. The mass adoption of solid-state batteries could not only pave the way for India’s more sustainable, green future but also significantly impact India’s economic growth.


The interest in solid-state battery technology is not limited to India. Globally, major companies are also focused on its development. Japan’s Toyota Motor, the world’s largest automaker, is a big proponent of solid-state batteries and plans to launch them globally within a few years. This global interest underscores the potential of this technology.

Nissan also works on solid-state battery technology and plans to launch an EV with a pure solid-state battery developed in-house by fiscal year 2028. Similarly, Honda plans to launch a solid-state battery test line in 2024, aiming to use these batteries in models later this decade. Honda has also invested in SES AI to develop semi-solid-state batteries jointly.


In China, CATL, one of the world’s biggest battery producers, unveiled a condensed matter battery last year. This semi-solid-state battery is designed to supply enough energy for electric passenger aircraft, with plans to start mass production for EVs later in 2023.
