ReNew Announces Rs.26,400 Crore Investment For Green Hydrogen Project

  • The facility will be made in three phases
  • The project is anticipated to be completed within 36-42 months of commencement

ReNew has announced a plan to invest an estimated INR 26,400 Crore towards setting up a green hydrogen project in Kerala. The production capacity of this project is approximately 220 Kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA). It will be made near the Vizhinjam Port in Kerala.

The facility will be made in three phases, with phase I having 100 KTPA green hydrogen derivative capacity and phases II & III having 500 KTPA capacity each.

The green hydrogen will produce 1100 KTPA of green ammonia and be powered by 2GW capacity electrolytes. The project is anticipated to be completed within 36-42 months of commencement.

By investing in this project, ReNew has aimed to contribute towards India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission to set up 5 MTPA green hydrogen production capacity by 2030 and promote exports of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

The project will require about 50 million litres of water per day. It will provide employment to 4,000 to 5,000 skilled and unskilled people and 18,000 people during construction.

In November of 2022, the company entered into a comprehensive agreement with Egypt to establish a green hydrogen facility within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, involving an investment of $8 billion. As part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, the country has set ambitious targets to develop a 5 million metric ton per annum (MTPA) capacity for green hydrogen production by 2030, focusing on promoting the export of green hydrogen and its related products.

Approximately 93% of hydrogen consumption occurs within the refining and fertiliser sectors. However, by 2030, hydrogen is expected to see widespread use in industries such as steel production, transportation, and as a blending component in fuels.
