Solar Drive Innovation In Large-Scale Solar Systems

In a major advancement for the renewable energy sector, Semikron Danfoss’ latest power module, featuring ROHM’s 2kV SiC MOSFETs, has been integrated into SMA Solar Technology’s solar system, marking a new milestone for high-efficiency, large-scale energy solutions.

Semikron Danfoss Elektronik GmbH & Co. KG, SMA Solar Technology AG, and ROHM Co., Ltd. have announced a strategic technological collaboration to power SMA’s new large-scale solar system, the Sunny Central FLEX. This modular platform is designed to streamline grid integration for photovoltaic (PV) installations, energy storage systems, and emerging energy technologies.

At the core of this innovation is Semikron Danfoss’ SEMITRANS® 20 module, integrated with ROHM’s newly developed 2kV class SiC MOSFETs. Specifically engineered for 1500V DC-link applications, ROHM’s latest devices offer simplified and highly efficient converter topologies with enhanced robustness against cosmic radiation—critical for ensuring longevity and reliability in harsh PV environments.

“ROHM’s 2kV SiC MOSFETs simplify high-power designs and device paralleling, supporting the demands of modern energy systems,” said Wolfram Harnack, President at ROHM Semiconductor GmbH. “With mass production underway, we are proud to contribute to the future of renewable energy solutions.”

Semikron Danfoss’ SEMITRANS® 20 is tailored for high-power, fast-switching applications. Peter Sontheimer, Senior Vice President of Semikron Danfoss’ Industry division, noted, “Our collaboration with ROHM over the past decade has advanced both silicon carbide (SiC) and silicon IGBT technologies in power modules. SEMITRANS® 20 is perfectly suited for solar, energy storage, electric vehicle chargers, and wind energy converters.”
