Wednesday, July 16, 2014: SunEdison, Inc. has announced a new project consisting of 159 kilowatts of solar photovoltaic micro grids with battery storage in six remote Indian villages, which will provide electricity to these areas and thus improving health and education for about 5,000 people.
SunEdison, that works with India’s Rural Electrification Corporation(REC) will build, operate and then transfer it to public entity after five years.
“Solar is considered to be the most practical solution to India’s remote areas” said, Pashupathy Gopalan, president of SunEdison Asia Pacific, Middle East and South Africa.
SunEdison will start constructing microgrids in September 2014 after seasonal monsoon is over and commission it by December 2014.
“The project is not just about economics, as a part of our SunEdison Eradication of Darkness(SEED) initiative will take into the account the long term social and environmental impact too. We believe that collaborative approach, where private sector work with govt sector is a winning model for future solar development in such areas,” he added.
