Tata Introduces Acti.ev Pure EV Platform, Set To Form The Basis For the Upcoming Punch EV

The newly developed pure electric vehicle framework will serve as the foundation for Tata’s mass-market EVs, encompassing models such as the Punch EV, Harrier EV, Curvv EV, and Safari EV.

Today marks a significant milestone for Tata Motors as they unveil their innovative pure electric vehicle platform, named the Acti.ev platform (suggestive of ‘Active’). This groundbreaking Gen 2 all-electric architecture is set to revolutionize Tata’s lineup, starting with the introduction of the Punch EV. Let’s take a closer look at what this means.

The Acti.ev platform is a game-changer specifically designed for electric vehicles. Its versatility is evident as it can accommodate various body styles. Tata Motors has confirmed that this platform will be the foundation for several models, including the Punch EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV, and Harrier EV. The design of the Acti.ev platform is noteworthy, offering a flat floor and a front trunk, or ‘frunk’, which provides additional storage space under the bonnet.

One of the most exciting aspects of the Acti.ev platform is its flexibility in powertrain configurations. It supports different setups, ranging from a single motor with either front-wheel or rear-wheel drive to a dual motor setup with all-wheel drive. While specific details about the battery packs remain confidential, Tata Motors has hinted at a range of 300 km to 600 km, thanks to a battery pack with 10 percent higher volumetric efficiency.

Charging capabilities of the Acti.ev platform are impressive, with a 400 V system supporting up to 150 kW charging speeds. Safety remains a paramount concern for Tata, and this new platform doesn’t disappoint. It boasts a robust crash test structure primarily made of high-strength steel, contributing to a five-star crash safety rating. This is achieved through an enhanced crash load path, side sill, and lateral structure design, ensuring maximum occupant safety in the event of a crash.

The interior design of vehicles on this EV-only platform will emphasize space efficiency. The integration of the battery into the chassis not only optimizes interior space but also ensures suitable ground clearance and ramp-over angles for diverse road conditions. The platform also incorporates the latest in connected car technology and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Expect features like Level-2 ADAS (upgradeable to Level-2+), a digital cockpit experience, over-the-air software updates, 5G compatibility, and third-party app integration.

In addition to the Acti.ev architecture, Tata Motors also operates on two other platforms. The Gen 1 platform, used in the Nexon EV, is a conversion of its existing internal combustion engine platform. At the other end of the spectrum lies the Gen 3 architecture, shared with Jaguar Land Rover’s EMA architecture, which will underpin Tata’s upcoming premium electric vehicle series, the Avinya. This diverse range of platforms underscores Tata Motors’ commitment to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry.
