Tata Power Invests ₹66.75B In Andhra Pradesh Solar Wafer Plant

A big bet on solar manufacturing in Andhra Pradesh? Tata Power Renewable plans a ₹66.75 billion ingot and wafer plant, creating jobs and strengthening India’s clean energy supply chain.

Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd has announced plans to build an ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, with an investment of ₹66.75 billion. The proposed greenfield plant will have a capacity of 10GW and is expected to create about 1000 direct jobs.

The project has received approval from the Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board, chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Once operational, the facility will position the state as a major centre for advanced solar manufacturing in the country, according to several estimates.

The plant will be developed at the IFFCO Kisan Special Economic Zone in Nellore district, where the state government has allocated 200 acres (about 80.93 hectares) for the project. Of this, 120 acres (about 48.56 hectares) will be used in the first phase, while the remaining 80 acres (almost 32.37 hectares) will be reserved for future expansion.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Tata Power Renewable Energy will also set up a 200MW captive renewable power plant. This will supply green electricity to the manufacturing unit and lower its carbon footprint.

State officials said Andhra Pradesh’s industrial readiness played a key role in attracting the project. Factors included the availability of plug-and-play land, strong infrastructure, port connectivity and assured access to renewable power.

Ingot and wafer manufacturing form the backbone of the solar value chain. These components are essential for producing solar cells and modules and are also used in semiconductor manufacturing.

Meanwhile, Nellore is steadily emerging as a solar manufacturing hub. Several renewable energy companies have already announced or begun large-scale projects in the region, creating a growing ecosystem.

 The investment supports India’s wider objective of strengthening domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on imported strategic components.

Welcoming the announcement, IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh said the investment reflected strong confidence in the state’s policies and governance. He added that the project would create skilled jobs, deepen India’s solar manufacturing base, and support India’s clean energy transition.

This also marks Tata Power Renewable Energy’s first manufacturing venture in Andhra Pradesh.
