The telecommunication sector in India will shift to the nex-gen 5G network by 2022, S K Gupta, Secretary, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said on Thursday, adding that in the coming five years access to digital platform will become very advanced.
Gupta further said that the use of big data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) is going to change the behaviour of consumers.
There has been dramatic shift in the landscape of media industry and implementation of new technology will be a key to success, he added.
Currently, about 400 million people in the country have access to good quality internet. Therefore, the possibility of using more media content by way of digital platform is quite high, Gupta pointed out while speaking at an event organised by industry body CII.
Rise in smartphone use
The TRAI secretary further said that due to the rise in smartphone use, form and nature of content development for media may also change.
Gupta also urged the media sector to try to fulfill the consumers expectations, emphasise more on consumers demand and their choice of contents, in order to boost the consumption of media content.
The government is yet to announce a specific time for the 5G spectrum auction. However, the government is optimistic on deployment of 5G in the country with Union Telecommunication Minister Manoj Sinha recently said that the country cannot afford to miss the 5G bus.
In addition to Internet speed, the arrival of 5G or fifth generation wireless system in the country will enable massive deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) that would considerably affect sectors such as manufacturing, education, retail, healthcare and media, among others.
