UCL, Hyundai Motor Company Partner For Carbon-Free Technologies

• In 2019, UCL set an ambitious target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030
• Hyundai Motor has committed to attaining carbon neutrality by 2045.

UCL and Hyundai has recently signed a contract on ‘Cooperation in areas of Research and Development for Hydrogen Production, Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Electrification Technology’.

As South Korea and UK has an agenda to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, so Hyundai Motor plans to strengthen its hydrogen economy and sustainable future mobility ecosystem.

Jaehoon (Jay) Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said: “Through joint research with UCL, one of the UK’s leading research universities, we will accelerate the pace of technological innovation in hydrogen production, fuel cells and electrification. We hope that this collaboration will contribute to achieving carbon neutrality in the transportation sector, which is a goal shared by Korea and the UK.”

Both organizations anticipate collaborating on research in various domains, including future mobility technologies, advanced materials, proprietary technologies, and fundamental industrial technologies. UCL’s recently established Advanced Propulsion Lab, situated on the UCL East campus in Stratford, will assume a crucial role in driving research efforts in these areas.

Dr. Michael Spence, UCL’s President and Provost, emphasized the significance of emerging technologies such as hydrogen generation, electric vehicles, and fuel cells in global efforts to limit the rise in global temperatures as outlined in the Paris Agreement. He expressed confidence that this partnership would leverage UCL’s world-renowned engineering research and Hyundai’s automotive expertise to expedite the development of these vital technologies.

Furthermore, both parties are committed to enhancing their cooperation on joint projects related to carbon reduction, aligning with their sustainability commitments. In 2019, UCL set an ambitious target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and reduce energy consumption by 40%, while Hyundai Motor has committed to attaining carbon neutrality by 2045.
