West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said IT majors Wipro and Microsoft have agreed to invest in the state.
Banerjee said that Wipro would be allocated 50 acres of land at the Silicon Valley IT hub at New Town, Kolkata, while Microsoft would start e-commerce platforms in West Bengal.
While addressing at a recent event in Kolkata, Banerjee informed that Wipro will take 50 acres of land at the Silicon Valley Hub, which will lead to the employment of 10,000 people. On the other hand, under the e-commerce platforms, Wipro will start two projects named ‘Sangam’ and ‘E-Web’.
Granting SEZ – Still an obstacle
This news comes after a long duration of two years when Banerjee declared that it is difficult for the West Bengal government to give SEZ status to Wipro for its second development centre in the state.
Infosys is another IT company which is stuck because of not getting SEZ status for its first project in the state. However, to circumvent the SEZ issue, the state government has decided to give some incentives instead. Now it is a matter of time for the IT biggies to step into the state and turn the wheels of employment.
