Worldwide PC Shipments Grew 1.1 Per Cent in Q3 of 2019: Gartner

  • 68 million units shipments were sold in the third quarter of 2019
  • Neither the Intel CPU shortage nor the US-China trade war had a significant impact on PC shipments
  • The EMEA PC market grew 3 per cent in the third quarter of 2019, with 19.4 million units total shipments
  • Lenovo retained the No. 1 position with 24.7 per cent market share and 5.8 per cent growth

According to the preliminary results by Gartner, Inc., worldwide PC shipments have shown an increase with 1.1 per cent growth in the third quarter of 2019. 68 million units shipments were sold in Q3 of 2019, up from 67 million units in the same quarter of 2018.

Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal research analyst at Gartner informed through a latest press release that the Windows 10 refresh cycle continued to be the primary driver for growth across all regions. However, the magnitude of the impact varied according to local market conditions and the stage of the refresh cycle, added Kitagawa.

A fair performance witnessed
Kitagawa further informed that in Japan, PC shipments grew 55 per cent in the third quarter of 2019, driven by the Windows 10 refresh cycle and a pending sales tax change. This strong growth helped propel the total worldwide PC market to growth, according to Kitagawa.

The press release also stated that neither the Intel CPU shortage nor the U.S.-China trade war had a significant impact on PC shipments in the third quarter of 2019. The Intel CPU shortage has continued to ease, and U.S. tariffs on China-built mobile PCs had a minimal impact on PC shipments as the date for the potential increase in tariffs was pushed out to December 2019, said Kitagawa.

A stable global scenario
Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) PC market grew 3 per cent in the third quarter of 2019, with 19.4 million units total shipments. PC shipments in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) declined 5.3 per cent compared with a year ago. The major cause behind such decline was weak PC demand in China.

Lenovo retained the first position in the third quarter of 2019 with 24.7 per cent market share and 5.8 per cent growth. Dell also experienced 5.5 per cent PC shipment growth in Q3 of 2019. Microsoft is currently ranked as the No. 7 vendor in the worldwide PC market.
