Kazam Simplifies EV Charging With Innovative Hardware And Software Solutions For All

Kazam, founded in Bengaluru in December 2020, took an unconventional leap from content creation to pioneering electric mobility innovations in India.

Initially launched as a YouTube channel in September 2020, Kazam focused on exploring the viability of electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India through interviews with owners of two- and three-wheelers. The initiative quickly resonated, amassing 20,000 views in its first week.

EV charging station (LEV AC)

Spotting a significant market gap—a lack of dedicated charging solutions for two- and three-wheelers—Kazam transitioned from content creation to developing EV charging hardware. It officially incorporated as a private limited company in December 2020. “We saw an opportunity to address the underserved needs of the EV market,” says Akshay Shekhar, Co-Founder and CEO of Kazam.

Explaining the meaning behind Kazam, Akshay shares that securing domain names in India is challenging, so they aimed for a distinctive, memorable name in the EV space. Drawing inspiration from DC’s Shazam and magical words like ‘Abracadabra,’ they chose Kazam, symbolising creativity and innovation. It represents their mission to create magic and stand out in the EV industry.

The startup manufactures EV charging stations and software to manage chargers and charging hubs. Unlike competitors who primarily focus on operating charging services, Kazam provides interoperable hardware solutions powered by proprietary technology. Their product portfolio includes light electric vehicle AC (LEV AC) and DC (LEV DC) charging stations, which are compatible with major vehicle manufacturers like Bajaj, Hero, Mahindra, and TVS.

Kazam has secured multiple patents covering the design and functionality of its charging stations, addressing areas such as component placement, efficient harnessing, and routing methods. They have also developed a robust communication stack that supports seamless connectivity through GSM, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi, which can switch dynamically between these methods. Another patent standardises vehicle-charger interactions using a CAN communication protocol, enabling optimised energy output tailored to individual vehicle battery specifications.

“We are committed to enabling a seamless EV ecosystem with innovative hardware and software solutions,” adds Akshay, emphasising Kazam’s role in shaping the EV market.

The startup designs and develops all products in-house while leveraging EMS facilities for large-scale manufacturing. The first 100 units of any product are produced internally to ensure thorough testing and quality assurance before transitioning to mass production at EMS houses.

Their in-house innovation centre has advanced tooling for mechanical shaping and forming, electronic soldering stations with stencils for precise solder paste application, and assembly lines for box building. The R&D facility also includes extensive testing capabilities, such as waveform analysers, load banks for resistance and load testing, and communication disruptors to evaluate performance under communication disturbances. With controlled temperature and dustproof environments, the centre upholds stringent standards across all product development and testing stages.

The startup has experienced rapid growth in the sales of charging stations. “We have over 40,000 chargers, with the majority of them at homes followed by e-commerce fleets. This year, sales have grown tenfold and have shown a significant increase in monthly sales from around 1000 in January to 9000 in October. Over the last eight to nine months, the scale-up has been remarkable, showcasing the incredible expansion in this market,” concludes Akshay.

The company is focused on collaborating with multiple partners, including EMS houses, across various geographies to ensure operational flexibility and resilience. It is also actively seeking partnerships with microprocessor and PCB manufacturers to enable local production, which remains a top priority. Additionally, the company is exploring partnerships with installation experts with the technical expertise to set up charging stations and efficiently manage earthing requirements. Furthermore, it is keen on identifying innovative earthing solutions that can reduce costs and installation time, enhancing overall operational efficiency.

The company achieved 4x growth in the last fiscal year, equivalent to 400%. It is on track to replicate 100% of that growth from the previous year this year. Over the next two years, Kazam aims to triple its revenue, building on its current growth trajectory.
