Humane has secured $241 million in funding from backers including Microsoft and OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman.
Humane AI, a company established by ex-Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has unveiled the AI Pin, a new wearable device poised to take on smartphones. It interacts with users through a virtual assistant using OpenAI technology GPT-4 and Microsoft’s cloud computing.
This small, two-part gadget attaches magnetically to clothing and operates without a screen, using voice, hand gestures, and a blue laser projector for interaction. Rather than a screen, it projects text and images onto the user’s hand with a laser system. It features a unique battery system allowing continuous power through swappable boosters for all-day use.
Focused on privacy, the Ai Pin only activates when interacted with, not constantly listening or recording. It utilizes T-Mobile’s network for connectivity and is powered by a Snapdragon processor with a dedicated Qualcomm AI engine. Notifications are indicated through a beacon, and the device operates on Humane’s AI-driven OS, Cosmos, which anticipates user needs without the need for traditional apps, as AI experiences are streamed on demand.
The AI Pin boasts an ultrawide camera (13MP), depth and motion sensors, and a speaker that can create a personal sound bubble. A Trust Light, backed by a privacy chip, indicates when sensors are active, and security measures prevent unauthorized tampering. The device, which includes a charging case and extra battery booster, offers users unlimited AI services, text, talk, data, and a dedicated phone number with the subscription.
The AI Pin, rejecting the trend of mixed-reality headsets, focuses on AI for functions like message composition in the user’s style, summarizing emails (‘Catch me up’ feature), and scanning objects to determine nutritional information.
Priced at $699 with an additional $25 monthly subscription, the Ai Pin comes in three colors. Set for pre-order in the US from November 16, its international release plans are pending.
