How UP Aiming To Become A Major Semiconductor Powerhouse; Explains State Cabinet

A month ago, after Uttar Pradesh cabinet chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh declared that the state would become a major semiconductor manufacturing hub, three firms were approved to set up one of the largest semiconductor parks in Greater Noida. In an effort to achieve this, the UP cabinet allotted 225 acres of land in Sector 10 and Sector 28 to produce chips.. 

According to Arun Vir Singh, the CEO of Yamuna Development Authority, 50 acres of land have been offered to Kaynes Technologies and Vama Sundari Investments in Sector 10 Noida. Apart from this, another company in sector 28 will be allotted 128 acres of land. The central government has already received the applicant’s approval request. The set-up is expected to begin soon, but the concerned authorities will supervise the approved companies. Companies that are given the task of building the setup will also be monitored by the government.

The UP state government has unleashed its semiconductor policy after Gujarat and Odisha to bolster the semiconductor industry. As per reports by Invest UP, the state has received project proposals worth Rs 40,038 crore. Apart from Kaynes Semicon and Vamasundari, Hiranandani’s Tarq Semiconductor and Aditech Semiconductor have proclaimed to invest Rs 28,440 crore and Rs 3,751 crore respectively. The state’s IT secretary claims to create 32,000 jobs from these projects.

The state is also performing exceptionally well in mobile manufacturing. In India, around 55 percent of mobile phones and 60 percent of related components are manufactured in Noida with Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Samsung being the major contributors. Along with mobile phones, the state is also transforming into a major manufacturing hub for semiconductor components, IT hardware, LED lighting, and non semiconductor components such as capacitors, switches, fuses, transformers, coils and many more.

Around 200 leading firms from the ESDM domain are operating in the state. Tokyo’s giant Marubeni Cop has also expressed its interest to set-up a top-notch industrial park in Noida. The proposal is now being discussed and evaluated by both the central and the state government. 

Now, speaking of semiconductor development, Vama Sundari Investment is gearing up to set-up a new semiconductor conductor unit in Noida, which will provide employment to 13,780 people. The unit will have the capacity of manufacturing 2.40 lakhs chips every month, but the project requires 19 MW of electricity and 2,000 MLD of water. As per the state’s semiconductor policy, all the three companies, Kaynes, Vamasundari, and Turck will have to invest Rs 40,000 to 80,000 crore in the allocated areas.
