IBM, L&T Partner For Next-Gen Processor Innovation

Aiming to develop advanced indigenous processors for various applications, matching global competition, L&T Semiconductor Technologies and IBM have planned to join hands.

On Tuesday, L&T Semiconductor Technologies announced plans to partner with IBM to develop advanced processors at the Semicon India 2024. This collaboration focuses on designs for edge devices, hybrid cloud systems, mobility, industrial applications, energy, and servers.

As stated by the companies, IBM and L&T Semiconductor Technologies aim to advance innovation and performance, delivering reliable and scalable computing solutions to support India’s goal of creating competitive global semiconductor technologies.

Last week, Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T) disclosed plans to invest over $300 million in establishing a fabless semiconductor company in India. Over the next three years, L&T aims to design and market chips while outsourcing production to develop 15 products and start sales by 2027.

Sandeep Kumar, CEO of L&T Semiconductor Technologies, stated that the current era is one of the most exhilarating technological periods, particularly for India’s semiconductor sector.

As semiconductors are reshaping industries and designs, he noted that the collaboration aims to merge their advanced design with IBM’s processors to create next-generation products.

The company indicated that in the partnership, L&T focuses on creating semiconductor smart devices across various sectors. At the same time, IBM is known for its leadership in silicon and processor innovation, independently and through collaborations with other partners.

Mukesh Khare, General Manager of IBM Semiconductors, mentioned that the partnership with L&T Semiconductor Technologies aligns with IBM’s ongoing effort to drive India’s digital transformation and economic growth. He emphasised that by combining their strengths and expertise, they aim to collaborate with various public and private partners to advance semiconductor and processor design technologies.

Earlier this year, IBM and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) signed an MoU to form a joint working group. Their goal is to expedite the development and production of processors for High Performance Computing (HPC) in India.
