Wang Wentao addressed a gathering in Brussels at a China-Europe Electric Vehicles event, attended by approximately 30 leading executives from both Chinese and European electric vehicle sectors, to exchange perspectives on the EU’s anti-subsidy allegations against Chinese EVs.
On Wednesday, China’s Commerce Minister, Wang Wentao, declared that Beijing intends to continue negotiations “until the last minute” regarding the European Union’s probe into electric vehicles. This investigation has reportedly been detrimental to the confidence of Chinese companies considering investments in Europe.
Wang expressed these remarks while attending a China-Europe Electric Vehicles event in Brussels, where approximately 30 leading executives from the Chinese and European electric vehicle industries convened to deliberate on the EU’s anti-subsidy case targeting China’s EVs.
Moreover, Wang is scheduled to meet with Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commission’s Trade Commissioner, on Thursday to address the escalating trade tensions. This meeting comes at a critical time as the European Commission is close to imposing final tariffs as high as 35.3% on electric vehicles manufactured in China, which would be in addition to the EU’s standard 10% car import duty.
The EU’s 27 member states are set to vote on these proposed final duties on September 25. The new tariffs will be enforced by the end of October unless a qualified majority—comprising at least 15 member states representing 65% of the total EU population—votes against the imposition of these levies.
