Amid the third week of staff protests at the Samsung Electronics factory in Chennai, the South Korean giant’s management told the media that workers in the facility are remunerated twice more than any company in the city. Around 1,000 workers who are demanding higher wages and union recognition in the facility have discontinued their work for almost three weeks.
According to the management, Samsung’s Chennai plant provides them a yearly revenue of $12 billion. In a press conference, Samsung executives said that the average monthly remuneration of full-time workers at the manufacturing facility is 1.8 times more than that of any company in the region. The Samsung facility is adjacent to the Dell and Foxconn plant in Sriperumbudur, which is well-known for electronics and automobile manufacturing.
The Samsung executives also added that in addition to welfare, health, and safety benefits, workers also receive their overtime payment on time and other allowances. The company management is eager to pay attention to the workers’ voices so that they can return to work as soon as possible to increase production. The protest imposes a huge challenge to the government’s ambition of augmenting foreign investments in India.
Experts worry that if these protests continue in other foreign firms, the target of achieving $500 billion in production by 2030 will be a difficult task. This potential impact on India’s economic goals is a cause for concern. Tamil Nadu’s labor secretary, Veera Raghava Rao said that efforts are being made to find an appropriate solution to the scuffle. As per records, Samsung workers earn Rs 25,000 per month and are demanding to escalate Rs 36,000 every month for the coming three years.
