STMicroelectronics’ first Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in France, with TotalEnergies, secures 75 MW from new wind and solar farms, targeting 100% renewable energy by 2027.
TotalEnergies and STMicroelectronics have signed a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply renewable electricity to STMicroelectronics’ sites in France. The agreement, which takes effect in January 2025, secures an overall volume of 1.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) of green power.
Under the deal, TotalEnergies will provide STMicroelectronics with renewable electricity—including guarantees of origin—generated from two recently commissioned wind and solar farms with a combined capacity of 75 MW. A key innovation in this agreement is the structuration services that convert intermittent renewable generation into a stable electricity supply, ensuring continuous energy availability. This marks the first time such a 15-year structured renewable PPA has been implemented in France.
Sophie Chevalier, Senior Vice President of Flexible Power & Integration at TotalEnergies, emphasised the deal’s importance: “We are delighted to partner with STMicroelectronics to deliver long-term, innovative clean power solutions. This agreement reflects our commitment to supporting the tech industry in its decarbonisation journey.”
For STMicroelectronics, the agreement is a critical step in its sustainability strategy. Geoff West, EVP and Chief Procurement Officer at STMicroelectronics, highlighted the company’s ambitious environmental targets: “This PPA is a major milestone in our roadmap to become carbon neutral by 2027. With this agreement, we are securing a substantial portion of renewable energy for our French operations, which span R&D, design, sales, and high-volume chip manufacturing.”
STMicroelectronics has already signed similar PPAs to support its operations in Italy and Malaysia, reinforcing its commitment to transitioning towards 100% renewable energy. This deal underscores the growing collaboration between technology and energy companies in driving the transition to sustainable industrial practices.
