Aiming to lead the EV market by 2030, Volkswagen has a bold five-year plan, including affordable electric cars, workforce cuts, and a high-tech Wolfsburg hub.
Volkswagen is looking to introduce an affordable electric vehicle (EV), unveiling a five-year strategy for its brand, following a significant cost-cutting deal.
Amidst a challenging economic climate, soaring domestic costs, tepid demand for EVs, and rising competition from budget-friendly Chinese EV makers, the company spent several months last year negotiating with employee representatives to improve its competitiveness.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, after a wave of strikes, Volkswagen agreed with its union to reduce its workforce by over 35,000 employees and cut billions of euros annually in costs while avoiding immediate factory closures in Germany.
Furthermore, as part of its recovery plan, Volkswagen revealed that its flagship Wolfsburg plant will become central to producing a new all-electric compact car platform. These low-cost electric cars is set to form a key part of the brand’s future direction.
The company announced that the first entry-level electric model will be produced in Wolfsburg, priced at approximately 20,000 euros ($20,761), with production set to begin in 2027.
Before this, an updated version of the company’s first all-electric small car will hit dealerships next year with a price tag under 25,000 euros.
Volkswagen’s CEO for Passenger Cars, Thomas Schafer, described the plan as the largest in the company’s history, aiming to make e-mobility more accessible. The Wolfsburg site will be restructured to accommodate modern technologies and new production processes, becoming the heart of the company’s all-electric compact car production. The EV models will be built on the new platform there.
Volkswagen has set a goal to become the leading volume manufacturer of electric vehicles worldwide by 2030. It also plans to launch nine new models by 2027, further enhancing its competitiveness through synergies and an expanded model range.
