Infineon To Double India Workforce, Focus On R&D

Although having no plans for a manufacturing plant in India, Infineon plans to double its India workforce to 5000 by 2030, focusing on R&D, innovation, and collaborations.

German semiconductor company Infineon Technologies has revealed plans to double its workforce in India to 5000 by 2030, focusing on the expansion of its research and development (R&D) capabilities. Currently, the firm employs around 2500 people in India, spread across four locations, primarily focusing on R&D.

Andreas Urschitz, Infineon’s Chief Marketing Officer and member of the management board, recently highlighted that many of the company’s cutting-edge connectivity controllers and automotive microcontrollers are developed in India.

Additionally, a significant portion of Infineon’s embedded software development takes place in the country. The company aims to strengthen its support for India’s domestic market and collaborate with local partners and customers for mutual growth.

In a move to foster innovation in India, Infineon has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with various Indian government bodies, including the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (through the Startup India initiative) and the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (via NIELIT University). These agreements aim to assist Indian startups in electronics and microelectronics through mentorship and technical support.

Furthermore, Infineon has partnered with the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) to advance the development of automotive semiconductor solutions. The company has also collaborated with CDIL Semiconductors in Mohali, agreeing to supply bare die wafers for the firm to package into semiconductor products.

Despite these advancements, Infineon has ruled out establishing a semiconductor manufacturing plant in India in the near future.

According to a report by evertique, Urschitz explained that setting up a large-scale fabrication plant (fab) would require substantial investment and expertise, making it commercially unfeasible at present.

Infineon, which employs over 58,000 people worldwide, continues to focus on its APAC operations.
