Tata Electronics has acquired the India operations of Chinese industrial company Justech Precision for nearly $100 million, a move aimed at strengthening its manufacturing capabilities as Apple increases iPhone assembly in India, CNBC reported. The deal was finalised in August, with HSBC Bank and HDFC Bank acting as advisors.
Justech Precision, headquartered in Kunshan, Jiangsu province, has been a key Apple supplier since 2008, providing advanced industrial machinery, including CNC systems used for precise cutting and fabrication to major Apple suppliers such as Foxconn. Its India arm, Justech Precision Industry India Pvt Ltd, was set up in 2019 in Tamil Nadu.
The acquisition is part of Tata Electronics’ broader strategy to expand its role in Apple’s supply chain. Earlier this year, the company acquired a 60 per cent stake in Pegatron’s India unit, which operates an iPhone assembly plant. Tata began assembling iPhones in 2023 and is expected to play a growing role as Apple reportedly plans to shift all US-bound iPhone production to India by 2026.
Currently, Foxconn accounts for roughly two-thirds of India’s iPhone shipments, while Tata Electronics handles the remaining third, according to Counterpoint Research co-founder Neil Shah. Analysts expect Tata’s share to rise as it expands capacity at its two Tamil Nadu plants and one in Karnataka, a former Wistron facility.
Apple’s move to diversify production comes amid China-US trade tensions, higher tariffs, and pandemic-related supply disruptions, though the company continues to maintain significant operations in China. India’s share of global iPhone production is expected to grow from 20 per cent at the start of 2025 to 26 per cent by year-end, according to Counterpoint Research.
The Justech acquisition enhances Tata Electronics’ manufacturing footprint and reinforces India’s position as a key hub for Apple’s iPhone production, aligning with the company’s long-term expansion plans in the country.
