Fujitsu Strengthens Renewable Grid Operations Through New Technology Partnership

The partnership aims to modernize power grid operations, enabling safer renewable integration and smarter infrastructure maintenance.

Fujitsu Limited and Chugoku Electric Power Transmission & Distribution Co., Inc. have entered into an intellectual property (IP) licensing agreement aimed at improving power grid operations and enabling greater integration of renewable energy.

Under the partnership, Fujitsu will utilize Chugoku Electric Power T&D’s intellectual property, including dynamic line rating technology and advanced transmission facility maintenance expertise, to develop a new operation and maintenance support service for power transmission and distribution companies.

Dynamic line rating technology allows utilities to adjust transmission capacity based on real-time environmental conditions such as temperature and wind speed, rather than relying on conservative worst-case assumptions. This approach enables more efficient use of existing transmission infrastructure while maintaining grid stability, helping utilities accommodate rising renewable energy generation.

The collaboration also addresses growing workforce challenges in grid maintenance. Traditional inspection and monitoring processes depend heavily on manual labor, prompting utilities to adopt digital technologies and drone-based inspections for safer and more efficient operations.

Fujitsu will combine the licensed technologies with its optical fiber sensing systems, data platforms, and AI analytics. The service collects vibration data from optical fibers installed along transmission lines, analyzes environmental conditions, and calculates available transmission capacity in real time. AI models will further predict future wind conditions and power transmission capacity, supporting proactive grid management.

The solution will also assist utilities in planning drone inspection routes, optimizing maintenance schedules, and reducing renewable energy curtailment by maximizing transmission efficiency.

The service will be offered under Fujitsu’s Uvance business model, which focuses on using data and AI to address societal challenges. Both companies plan to further enhance the platform, including integrating generative AI capabilities to support advanced inspection and repair planning, contributing to more resilient and sustainable power infrastructure worldwide.
