Sony, TSMC to Invest $6.3B in Next-Generation Sensor Chips

Sony and TSMC are deepening their semiconductor partnership with a planned $6.3 billion investment aimed at advancing image sensor manufacturing in Japan.

Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are planning to invest around 1 trillion yen ($6.32 billion) in a joint venture focused on manufacturing next-generation image sensors, according to a Nikkei report.

The proposed venture is expected to be established in Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture, where the two companies are already expanding their semiconductor manufacturing presence. Sony is expected to hold a 60 per cent stake in the joint venture, while TSMC will own the remaining 40 per cent.

Commercial production of the new-generation image sensor chips could begin as early as 2029, Nikkei reported. The investment would strengthen Japan’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities while combining the two companies’ complementary strengths in sensor development and chip production.

Sony and TSMC announced plans for the partnership in May. The companies said at the time that the joint venture would focus on developing and manufacturing advanced image sensors, bringing together Sony’s expertise in image sensor technology with TSMC’s semiconductor manufacturing and process capabilities.

The partnership is also expected to explore applications beyond smartphones, including physical artificial intelligence technologies for sectors such as automobiles and robotics.

Image sensors are a critical component in cameras used across smartphones, vehicles, industrial equipment and other electronic devices. Sony is the world’s largest supplier of image sensors, giving it a strong position in the rapidly expanding market for camera-based sensing technologies.

TSMC, meanwhile, is the world’s largest contract chip manufacturer and operates advanced semiconductor production facilities globally. Its manufacturing expertise could help Sony develop and produce more advanced sensor technologies at scale.

The planned investment comes as demand for sophisticated sensing systems grows across automotive and robotics applications. Advanced image sensors are increasingly being used to enable perception and decision-making in vehicles and machines, creating new opportunities beyond conventional smartphone cameras.

Sony declined to comment on the Nikkei report, while TSMC had not immediately responded to Reuters’ request for comment.

If completed as planned, the joint venture could become an important part of both companies’ efforts to expand next-generation semiconductor and sensing technologies in Japan.
