India Expands Semiconductor Push With 5-8 New Facilities

India is expected to add five to eight semiconductor facilities over the next seven to eight years as the country strengthens domestic chip manufacturing and supply-chain capabilities.

India is expected to see five to eight more semiconductor facilities become operational over the next seven to eight years as the country strengthens its domestic chip manufacturing capabilities, prime minister Narendra Modi said in his Independence Day address.

Three semiconductor assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) facilities operated by Micron Technology, Kaynes Semicon and CG Semi have already started commercial production this year. Located in Sanand, Gujarat, the facilities have also begun exporting semiconductor products, Modi said.

These plants are part of a broader semiconductor push that includes nine additional projects approved under the first phase of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which has an outlay of ₹760 billion. The approved projects include Tata Electronics’ semiconductor fabrication facility.

The government approved the second phase of ISM with an allocation of ₹1.27 trillion last month, with the administrative notification expected soon.

Modi said growing geopolitical risks and the increasing use of critical technologies as strategic tools have made domestic semiconductor capabilities increasingly important. He stressed the need to build an end-to-end ecosystem covering chip design, manufacturing and other parts of the supply chain.

“From design to manufacturing, India must emerge as a trusted hub in the global supply chain,” he said.

The Prime Minister also announced plans to train 10 million young people in artificial intelligence over the next year as part of a nationwide skilling initiative.
