HAL, Safran to Develop Indigenous ‘Aravalli’ Engine for Next-Gen Helicopters 

HAL and Safran will jointly develop the 3,500-4,000 shaft horsepower Aravalli engine for India’s next-generation military helicopters. 

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and France’s Safran Helicopter Engines have signed an agreement to jointly develop a high-power turboshaft engine for India’s next-generation helicopters.

Named Aravalli, the engine will power HAL’s 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the 12.5-tonne Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). The programme is being executed through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt Ltd, the 50:50 joint venture between HAL and Safran.

The 3,500-4,000 shaft horsepower engine will be developed along with lifecycle support. HAL said the programme marks the first time India will design and develop a high-power helicopter engine domestically, representing a shift from licensed production towards greater participation in core propulsion technology development.

The engine will be manufactured at SAFHAL’s facility in Tumakuru, Karnataka. HAL is expected to gain capabilities in critical areas including high-pressure compressors, power turbines, fuel and oil systems, accessory gearboxes and external engine systems.

Indian engineers will work with Safran teams throughout the development programme, providing exposure to global design methodologies, testing practices and certification requirements. The expertise and intellectual property generated through the project could also support future indigenous aero-engine programmes.

The initiative is expected to expand opportunities for Indian companies involved in advanced materials, precision machining and castings, while supporting the development of domestic maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities.

Design development of the Aravalli engine is targeted for completion by 2032-33. The IMRH and DBMRH programmes will require clearances from the Defence Acquisition Council and Cabinet Committee on Security.

Although the helicopters are being developed for the Indian Armed Forces, their potential applications include offshore transportation, utility operations and VVIP transport, creating possible opportunities in the civil aerospace sector.

The programme builds on HAL and Safran’s longstanding partnership, which includes engines used in the Cheetah, Chetak, Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Combat Helicopter and Light Utility Helicopter.

HAL said the Aravalli project will strengthen India’s ability to develop advanced propulsion systems and create a foundation for future indigenous rotorcraft programmes.
