European device makers can now certify Wi-SUN FAN products for global markets, including North America, Brazil, Japan and Australia/New Zealand, without leaving the region
Germany-based LocosLab GmbH has been appointed as the first Wi-SUN Field Area Network (FAN) authorised test lab in Europe, expanding access to certification for manufacturers developing Wi-SUN FAN devices for global markets.
The appointment by the Wi-SUN Alliance will allow manufacturers worldwide, particularly European device makers, to complete Wi-SUN FAN certification locally instead of shipping products to test facilities outside Europe. This is expected to reduce certification-related costs, logistics and turnaround times.
The development comes as adoption of Wi-SUN FAN expands across smart grid and smart city applications in Europe. The Wi-SUN FAN Low Energy (LE) profile is designed for battery-powered devices requiring operational lifespans of 10 to 20 years, including smart gas and water meters and smart city sensors.
The Wi-SUN Alliance said the recent ratification of Wi-SUN FAN as ISO/IEC/IEEE 32857:2026, along with the growth of smart grid modernisation, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) 2.0 and smart city initiatives, is driving demand for Wi-SUN-based deployments in Europe.
LocosLab’s authorisation covers certification across the Wi-SUN FAN specification, enabling manufacturers to test devices intended for multiple international markets through a European facility.
“European manufacturers building Wi-SUN FAN products for global deployment can now certify their devices for multiple international markets locally. That offers a meaningful reduction in time, cost, and logistical complexity,” said Phil Beecher, President and CEO, Wi-SUN Alliance.
Prof. Dr. Pedro José Marrón, CEO, LocosLab, said the authorisation provides European utilities, municipalities and device manufacturers with local certification infrastructure for developing interoperable Wi-SUN FAN products.
The Wi-SUN Alliance expects the availability of a European authorised test laboratory to support the growing deployment of Wi-SUN FAN across smart metering, grid-edge and smart city applications.
