BASF aims to strengthen its local innovation and technical capabilities to develop materials solutions that meet customers’ evolving requirements
BASF has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) to expand its semiconductor materials operations in Taiwan, strengthening its capabilities to support the development of next-generation chips using process technologies below 2 nanometers.
The expansion will focus on BASF’s Electronic Materials site in Kuanyin, Taoyuan, where the company plans to increase production capacity for advanced semiconductor materials, enhance quality analysis capabilities and expand its Innovation Center.
The investment aims to address rising global demand for ultra-high-purity specialty chemicals and other materials required for advanced semiconductor manufacturing, particularly as the industry advances towards sub-2nm process nodes and AI-driven chip technologies.
The expansion will also strengthen BASF’s local manufacturing, quality assurance and technical service capabilities, enabling faster customer support, closer technical collaboration and a more reliable supply of advanced materials. The company expects the investment to improve supply chain resilience and strengthen its proximity to semiconductor manufacturers in Taiwan.
“Taiwan is a global hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing, with leading-edge process technologies and a highly integrated industry ecosystem,” said Gops Pillay, President, Global Operating Division of BASF.
Pillay added that establishing the strategic base for BASF’s global Electronic Materials operations in Taiwan in 2025 reflected the market’s importance to the global semiconductor ecosystem and the company’s confidence in its long-term growth potential.
Jens Liebermann, Senior Vice President, Global Electronic Materials business and Chairman of BASF Taiwan, said the LoI marks another milestone in the company’s long-term commitment to the semiconductor industry.
As semiconductor technologies advance, BASF aims to strengthen its local innovation and technical capabilities to develop materials solutions that meet customers’ evolving requirements. The company also plans to deepen collaboration with local industry partners to support future semiconductor technology generations and reinforce Taiwan’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
