Volkswagen Partners With NXP for Software-Defined Vehicle Architecture

The partnership will support the adoption of zonal control architecture across Volkswagen Group brands and vehicle segments.

Volkswagen Group and NXP Semiconductors have entered into a strategic partnership to support the development of Volkswagen’s future software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture using NXP’s S32K5 family of microcontrollers (MCUs). The first vehicle featuring the new architecture is planned for 2027.

The partnership will support the adoption of zonal control architecture across Volkswagen Group brands and vehicle segments. The architecture is being developed by Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies, LLC (RV Tech), a joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Rivian, and is intended for use in vehicles from both companies.

The S32K5 MCUs will serve as core processors in vehicle zonal controllers, connecting sensors and actuators and processing data from specific areas of a vehicle. They will manage functions including lighting, body electronics, comfort, chassis and safety systems, working alongside high-performance processors responsible for central computing and complex functions such as automated driving and advanced infotainment.

Zonal architecture consolidates functions previously managed by separate electronic control units (ECUs) into fewer controllers. This approach is expected to reduce hardware complexity, simplify vehicle development and improve scalability while providing a common technology foundation for different vehicle brands and segments.

Karsten Schnake, Member of the Extended Executive Committee and Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Procurement, said semiconductors were strategic technologies for the automotive industry. He added that the partnership would help Volkswagen define technology requirements early, leverage its scale across brands and improve long-term planning certainty for both companies.

Werner Tietz, Member of the Extended Volkswagen Group Executive Committee responsible for Group Research and Development, said the zonal architecture would help harmonise key technologies, reduce complexity and accelerate innovation across the Group while enabling advanced digital capabilities.

Rafael Sotomayor, President and CEO of NXP Semiconductors, said the collaboration would combine real-time computing, trusted edge intelligence and continuous software innovation to support safe, secure and reliable software-defined vehicles.

According to Lars Reger, Executive Vice President and CTO at NXP Semiconductors, the S32K5 family is designed to support safe real-time computing, secure over-the-air (OTA) software updates and the consolidation of vehicle functions, enabling vehicles to receive software enhancements throughout their lifecycle.

The partnership forms part of Volkswagen Group’s broader semiconductor strategy, which focuses on establishing direct, long-term relationships with semiconductor suppliers to strengthen supply-chain resilience, harmonise technologies across brands and support future vehicle development.
