India to Be a Semiconductor Powerhouse by 2047: MOD

The statement from MOD said that semiconductor technology is important for national sovereignty, digital security, and economic strength.

The Defence Ministry said on Friday that India aims to be self- reliant in semiconductor manufacturing and will be leading the production of selected next-generation chips by 2047. The vision encompasses establishing a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem that can generate high-value employment opportunities, along with delivering inclusive social benefits.

The Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation conclave (ESTIC) 2026, held at Bharat Mandapam, was inaugurated by the Prime Minister carrying the theme of ‘Creative Minds, Catalysing Science, Empowering Society’. It was jointly organised by 12 ministries led by the principal scientific adviser to the government of India. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) led the thematic session on ‘Semiconductors and Next-Generation Chips’ at ESTIC 2026.

The discussion focused on semiconductor technologies, custom-built artificial intelligence (AI) systems on chips (SOCs), intelligence in silicon edge and emerging microprocessor technologies.

The statement from MOD said that semiconductor technology is important for national sovereignty, digital security, and economic strength. It plays a key role in the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, and Atmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening technological capabilities.
