Audi has been hard on developing three all-new EVs which it plans to launch in the global car market by 2020.
Audi may bring the EV to India provided the infrastructure is in place. The announcement comes at a time when the Indian government is already considering an ambitious plan of having only electric vehicles in India by 2030. The same was confirmed by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari at the 7th annual SIAM convention last year.
Rahul Ansari, Head of Audi India, spoke in an interview to PTI, “Globally Audi will launch three EVs until 2020. We will be ready to launch an EV in 2019-2020 in India but for that charging infrastructure needs to be there,” He further added, “It will depend (introduction of EVs) in terms how far the infrastructure has developed. If the infrastructure is ready we will make a decision of launching in India otherwise we will have to delay it.”
The German carmaking major has already started working on that front and aims to have 30 per cent EV market share by 2025. Audi plans to introduce one EV every year starting 2020. Audi took to the stage at the Geneva Motor Show 2018 to showcase their first all-electric e-tron SUV prototype. Before the SUV enters full-blown production, Audi will be manufacturing 250 development vehicles which will be tested under extreme conditions worldwide. Audi has not mentioned any details about the driving range, but states the EV will have “a range suitable for everyday use”. The production version of the Audi e-tron will launch at the end of 2018 for European markets.
