Ashok Leyland and ABB Team Up To Develop Electric Bus With Flash-Charge Technology

  • The technology helps to avoid the need to pull the e-vehicle out of service for recharging every few hours
  • Ashok Leyland will manufacture and supply electrics buses compatible with TOSA technology

According to a report by the Economic Times, Ashok Leyland and ABB Power Products have teamed up to develop a pilot electric bus that will work on flash-charge technology. This technology will allow charging of the battery within seconds as per the company.

The report also said that the technology helps to avoid the need to pull the e-vehicle out of service for recharging every few hours. This minimises the size of the fleet and also increases passenger carrying capacity.

TOSA flash-charging technology

As per the report, N Venu, managing director, ABB Power Products and Systems India Ltd said that the aim is to provide a zero local emission mass public transportation bus system with high passenger capacity. The report also said that Ashok Leyland will develop electric buses with ABB’s TOSA flash-charging technology. They will also work on providing operational support and service.

The report said that during the implementation of the technology, the bus is connected to the charging infrastructure at selected bus stops. The batteries are charged within 15 seconds with a 600-kilowatt power boost. It also said that an additional charge of few minutes, offers a full recharge without interrupting the bus schedule.

Under this agreement, ABB Power Grids business in India will plan, design, engineer install and commission charging system. On the other hand, Ashok Leyland will manufacture and supply electrics buses compatible with TOSA technology.
