As per a report by Reuters, LG Chem will exclusively supply electric vehicle (EV) batteries to U.S. electric carmaker Lucid Motors. The company plans to start production of its Lucid Air sedan later this year.
The report added that the company said that LG Chem will supply cylindrical batteries for the U.S. EV maker’s standard Lucid Air models from the second half of this year to 2023. The company did not disclose the size or value of the supply contract with Lucid Motors under the contract.
Necessary energy density and cell availability
As per the report, Lucid Motors CEO and CTO Peter Rawlinson said in a statement that the agreement with LG Chem puts Lucid on the best possible path to production for the Lucid Air. It will ensure the necessary energy density and cell availability to fulfill the promise of class-leading range to consumers.
In December last year, General Motors (GM) has entered into a joint venture worth $2.3 billion with LG Chem to produce lithium-ion battery cells in Ohio. The facility will supply batteries for upcoming GM battery-electric vehicles which includes a pickup truck that will go into production in 2021.
