Govt says that tech nodes of 45nm account for half of the total semiconductor market in India
Central Cabinet, in a recent meeting, approved a modification in the Programme for the development of semiconductors and display manufacturing ecosystem in India. As per the new changes, uniform fiscal support of 50% of Project Cost shall be provided across all technology nodes for setting up Semiconductor Fabs. For Setting up Display Fabs, similar fiscal support of 50% of Project Cost on a pari-passu basis will be provided. In addition, 50% of Capital Expenditure will be fiscally supported on a pari-passu basis under Scheme for Setting up of Compound Semiconductors / Silicon Photonics / Sensors Fab and Semiconductor ATMP /OSAT facilities in India. Also, from now on, target technologies will include Discrete Semiconductor Fabs as well.
It is noteworthy that the current programme has attracted many global semiconductor players for setting up manufacturing in India. Now, with the modified version, investments are expected to sour even higher in the Indian fabs sector.
India Semiconductor Mission is responsible to develop the semiconductors and display manufacturing ecosystem in India. To aid this, industry and academia experts from around the globe were brought together under an Advisory Committee. The govt accepted its recommendation to provide uniform support for all technology nodes of silicon semiconductor fabs / Silicon Photonics / Sensors / Discrete Semiconductor Fabs and ATMP/OSAT. As the technology nodes of 45nm and above have high demand in the Automotive, Power and Telecom sectors, this segment constitutes approximately 50% of the total semiconductor market, remarked the govt press release.
