Importing Air Conditioners With Refrigerants Banned in India

Out of $469 million worth of split ACs imported in India during FY20, ACs worth $249 million were imported from China and ACs worth $189 million were imported from Vietnam

The government of India has completely banned the import of air conditioners with refrigerants in the country. The move seems inspired from encouraging local manufacturing of electronics in India. It is worth mentioning here that most of the ACs imported in the country, are filled with refrigerants.

In numbers, India imported a split ACs worth $469 million in FY20. ACs worth $249 million were imported from China and ACs worth $189 million were imported from Vietnam. Similarly, window ACs worth a total of $35 million were also imported during the same time. Thailand and China had accounted for $18 million and $14 million worth of these imports.

Four days after the new broke out, shares of Amber Enterprises India rallied 17 per cent to Rs 2,545 on the BSE on Monday. The company is one of the leaders in Indian Room Air Conditioner (RAC) industry. It is also present in mobile application air conditioner industry.

One after another electronics category

Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has recently made the random testing on LED Lights and control gears for LED products imported in India. The randomly picked up samples will be sent to Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) for testing.

Interestingly, China is among the world’s largest exporter of LED lights and raw materials required for making LED lights. During 2014-15, India imported LED lighting products under HS code 9405, worth US$ 222.3 million. China was the largest supplier with a share of 84.76 per cent, followed by Republic of Korea with 5.43 per cent and Hong Kong with 2.4 per cent.

DGFT in other notification had pointed out towards putting restrictions on import of color TVs ranging from 36 cm to 105 cm (14 inch to pprox 41 inch). Dated 30 July 2020, the notification also mentioned that a separate circular will be published explaining about the procedure for grant of licenses.

China and Vietnam imported color televisions (TVs) worth $428 million and $293 million during 2019-20 period, respectively. The total imports of color TVs in India stood at $781 million in 2019-20. Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, and Germany were the other countries that imported TVs to India.
