As government’s flagship initiatives like the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme, electronic component manufacturing scheme (ECMS), and India semiconductor mission (ISM), bolster domestic manufacturing, India’s digital economy now accounts for up to 14 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) according to the release.
With this, electronic goods have become India’s third largest export category and mobile phones becoming the country’ largest export product from 153rd position in FY2014-15. India has now emerged as the world’s second largest mobile phone manufacturer.
India’s mobile phone exports have surged 165-fold, rising from $179 million to nearly $27 billion with women accounting for nearly 70 per cent of total workforce in mobile phone manufacturing.
The data further highlighted that India’s digital connectivity quadrupled in the same period from 252 million internet users in 2014 to 1.09 billion in March 2026. Additionally, 5G services are available in 99.9 per cent districts across States and Union Territories. Moreover, rural connectivity has also expanded, with 631K villages now covered by 4G services through Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and other telecom operators.
