Lux and Discovery, powered by AMD technologies, will combine AI and high-performance computing to accelerate breakthroughs in energy, healthcare, manufacturing and national security research.
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced its role in powering the US department of energy’s (DOE) Genesis Mission with two next-generation supercomputers designed to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI)-driven scientific research. The first system, Lux, is expected to become operational in October 2026, while Discovery, a next-generation exascale supercomputer being developed with the DOE, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and HPE, will serve as the programme’s long-term computing platform.
The Genesis Mission brings together national laboratories, academia, industry and government agencies to combine AI with high-performance computing (HPC) for faster scientific discovery across energy, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, materials science and national security. The initiative aims to shorten research timelines while improving productivity and innovation.
Lux will integrate AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, AMD EPYC processors, AMD Pensando networking technologies and an open software ecosystem to support AI, simulation and cloud-native computing on a unified platform. The system is designed to streamline the complete research workflow—from data collection and simulations to AI-powered analysis—and will also support applications such as the American science cloud, digital twins and autonomous laboratories.
Discovery will build on this foundation with 6th Generation AMD EPYC processors, AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs, Pensando networking and the ROCm software stack. It is designed to deliver high-precision simulations, AI workloads and advanced analytics for mission-critical scientific research.
AMD highlighted that its existing technologies are already demonstrating the value of converged AI and HPC through the Frontier supercomputer, where researchers have reduced plant image analysis from 168 hours to less than one minute while advancing fusion energy research.
The company believes Lux and Discovery will accelerate research in areas including critical mineral recovery, hydropower, electrical grid resilience and climate response. AMD has also invited funded research teams to begin preparing workloads for deployment on Lux to help build scalable AI-driven scientific workflows for future discoveries.
