Tata Group has recently revealed plans to set up an electronics and mobile technology manufacturing facility in Assam, with an investment of ₹300 billion. Highlighting that this is a significant development for the state’s industrial sector, the project is expected to be completed within five years, generating at least 30,000 jobs.
A report by The Assam Tribune has acknowledged this to one of the largest industrial investments in Assam’s history.
The announcement was made by Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran during the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, where he confirmed that the new mobile manufacturing unit would be established in the state.
He emphasised the scale of the project, which will mirror the company’s ongoing semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, Morigaon district. The semiconductor facility, valued at ₹270 billion, will be India’s first indigenous chip assembly and testing plant, creating 27,000 jobs.
Chandrasekaran also highlighted the Tata Group’s commitment to training skilled workers in Assam, with plans to develop at least 5000 skilled professionals over the next seven years to meet the industry’s demands.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed optimism over the state’s growing industrial landscape, describing the project as a catalyst for further economic growth. Sarma had personally inquired about Tata’s future plans, receiving confirmation of the large-scale mobile manufacturing unit.
The Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit has attracted investment pledges totalling over ₹4.91 trillion, as the state is emerging as an industrial hub. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the event’s inauguration, underscored Assam’s increasing significance in India’s electronics and semiconductor industries. The Tata Group’s commitment further strengthens the state’s potential as a player in high-tech manufacturing.
