Challenging rivals like Tesla in China with competitive prices, BYD partners with AI firm DeepSeek to launch budget-friendly, advanced driver-assistance tech.
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Build Your Dream (BYD) has revealed its collaboration with AI company DeepSeek to introduce advanced driver assistance systems in its cars on Monday.
At an event, BYD’s founder and chairman, Wang Chuanfu, shared that the company will be rolling out a new system, ‘DiPilot’, which will be incorporated across its vehicle lineup. This includes a budget-friendly version priced at 69,800 yuan. Over 20 new models featuring the driver assistance technology were launched on Monday.
BYD had previously adopted a more cautious approach to AI technology. By launching this assisted driving system, now the question arises whether BYD is trying to compete more vigorously within China’s rapidly growing electric vehicle market. The move also highlights the increasing importance of local AI technologies.
According to a prediction by the Economic Times, this announcement could give BYD a competitive advantage over both domestic rivals and global players, such as Tesla, in China’s EV market.
Tesla has recently experienced a drop in sales within China, while local companies, including BYD, are seeing growth. Furthermore, Tesla’s ‘Full Self-Driving’ software has yet to be approved by Chinese authorities, potentially limiting its rollout in the region.
Meanwhile, other Chinese manufacturers, such as Geely, Great Wall Motor, and Leapmotor, are also set to incorporate DeepSeek’s technology.
Driver assistance systems use a combination of cameras, sensors, AI, and software to assist with tasks such as lane-keeping, cruise control, and collision avoidance, reducing the need for human intervention.
BYD hopes to improve road safety by using AI to monitor traffic conditions and help avoid hazardous situations in real time.
While it is unclear if BYD plans to expand these smart cars internationally, the company is the first in China to offer such advanced features in a car priced under 70,000 yuan, making these technologies more accessible to a wider audience.
