The BYD Seal slated for India is expected to come with an 82.5kWh battery, offering a range of 700km.
BYD Auto is gearing up to enhance its presence in the Indian market by introducing its third model, the Seal all-electric sedan. Scheduled for launch on March 5, the Seal EV will join BYD’s existing lineup in India, which includes the Atto 3 SUV and e6 MPV. As previously reported, dealerships have unofficially started accepting bookings for the new model, and the Seal has been spotted undergoing tests on the outskirts of Chennai.
Internationally, the Seal sedan has two battery options: a 61.4kWh pack providing up to 500km of range according to the CLTC standard and a larger 82.5kWh battery boasting a claimed range of 700km. It is anticipated that the latter option will be made available in India.
The 82.5kWh battery, which features BYD’s proprietary ‘Blade Battery’ technology, supports fast charging up to 150kW. It powers two electric motors, one on each axle, delivering a total output of 530hp and 670Nm of torque. The all-wheel-drive Seal can accelerate from 0 to 100kph in just 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 180kph, impressive for a vehicle that weighs around 2.2 tonnes.
The Seal is a sleek sedan, measuring 4,800mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 1,460mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,920mm. It features a 400-litre boot and a 53-litre front trunk (frunk). The design of the Seal follows BYD’s “ocean aesthetics” theme, with a name inspired by the ocean. Its standout features include a coupe-like all-glass roof, flush-fitting door handles, boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, a split headlamp design, and a full-width LED light bar at the rear, all of which are likely to appeal to Indian consumers.
The BYD Seal is expected to be priced at around Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom). Dealers have indicated that deliveries of the Seal EV will begin shortly after the price announcement on March 5. While the Seal does not have any direct competitors in its segment, it is expected to compete with vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 SUV and Kia’s EV6 crossover, given its price range.
