Chinese Companies Lead The Way In Automotive Display Market

  • Propelling China’s position as a powerhouse in the broader displays industry with a substantial 45.3% market share in 1H23
  • Their capabilities and strategic moves are reshaping the automotive display landscape, setting the stage for further industry advancements.

In the first half of 2023, Chinese companies have once again asserted their dominance, emerging as the leading suppliers in the automotive display market. This latest feat further solidifies their position as powerhouses within the broader displays industry, having previously conquered the realms of television and smartphone displays. Insights from Omdia’s Automotive Display Intelligence Service reveal that Chinese enterprises now command an impressive 45.3% market share, a substantial leap from their 7.1% share a decade ago. Moreover, Chinese suppliers have secured a commanding majority share of 55.5% in the a-Si LCD (Liquid crystal display) market and have made inroads into the OLED (organic light-emitting diode) market, claiming a noteworthy 17.8% share.

BOE(Bill of Exchange) and Tianma are at the forefront of this remarkable growth, whose combined market share soars to 30.7%. BOE, in particular, stands out as the sole panel supplier, boasting a market share exceeding 15%. The company’s impressive capacity to meet the demands of the automotive display market is underscored by its two Gen8.6 TFT (Thin Film Transistor)LCD fabs, one dedicated to a-Si and the other to Oxide, alongside two Gen6 OLED fabs offering cost-effective platform models. BOE has firmly established itself as the leader in centre-stack display technology and the aftermarket sector. Simultaneously, Tianma remains on an expansion trajectory for its automotive display production lines, with a-Si LCD as its primary focus. Tianma commands a share of 24% in the instrument cluster display market.

Stacy Wu, Senior Principal Analyst at Omdia’s Displays practice, articulated the industry’s expectations, stating, “Omdia anticipates that Chinese suppliers will sustain a high level of capacity for automotive display production.” Beyond BOE, other key players, such as HKC, Tianma, and CSOT, are also planning to allocate a significant portion of Gen8.x a-Si/Oxide LCD production for automotive applications. The strategic shift towards the automotive sector is imminent, with BOE and Tianma gearing up to redirect more LTPS LCD capacity from smartphone displays. In addition to BOE and EDO, Tianma, CSOT, and Visionox are all poised to enter the OLED automotive display manufacturing arena. The combination of cost-effectiveness and ample capacity positions Chinese companies to maintain their dominance in the automotive display market, propelling them to the forefront of this pivotal industry.
