During his US visit, the Economy Minister of Netherlands stated the importance of China as a trading partner and advocated for ASML’s operational freedom amid tightening export regulations.
On Monday, the Netherlands’ economy minister, Dirk Beljaarts, underscored the significance of China as a trading partner during his US visit. He also reiterated the need for Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer ASML to be allowed to operate with substantial freedom.
Beljaarts noted that his meeting with US Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves was focused on promoting bilateral trade rather than discussing export restrictions, which do not fall within his jurisdiction.
According to a report by the Economic Times, Beljaarts’ visit comes ahead of expected U.S. regulations that will impose stricter controls on semiconductor exports to specific chip manufacturing facilities in China.
ASML, a key equipment provider to chipmakers, has recently faced heightened scrutiny. Following pressure from the United States, the Dutch government implemented new export license requirements for a broader range of ASML products destined for China.
Reflecting on ASML’s status, he referred to it as a ‘crown jewel’ of the Netherlands, highlighting national pride in the company. He asserted that it is crucial for ASML to operate within the existing regulations and that their discussions primarily revolved around ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Furthermore, Beljaarts highlighted the importance of maintaining strong trade relations with both China and the US, along with other global partners. He expressed the need for the Netherlands to support its economy and ensure that Dutch companies have the freedom to conduct business.
