EDAG, Baier Motors Develop Electric Motorcycle for Africa

The Oryx Concept motorcycle, a collaboration between EDAG Group and start-up Baier Motors, is designed to meet the increasing demand in Africa for a sturdy, dependable, and feature-rich product. Baier Motors is actively seeking more investors to expedite the project’s progress.

The Switzerland-based EDAG Group and Bavaria’s Baier Motors GmbH have developed a motorcycle concept tailored for Africa. The Oryx Concept motorcycle sets new durability, reliability, and sustainability standards, offering electric and internal combustion engine options. This design ensures the product is prepared for the future.

The Oryx Concept motorcycle stands out from mid-range products in Africa by fully meeting customer needs for robustness, reliability, and features. The project’s next phase involves finalizing the concept development and starting series production. Baier Motors is seeking additional investors to accelerate this process.

The collaboration between Baier Motors and EDAG Group began in 2022, focusing on the motorcycle’s design and production plant. A mobile prototype with an electric powertrain was constructed, with plans for final assembly at various African sites. The first models, available with either a combustion engine or an electric powertrain, are expected to reach customers in two years.

Philipp Berchtenbreiter of the EDAG Group highlights the Oryx concept’s modularity, allowing Baier Motors to adapt to market changes flexibly. Torben Baier, managing director of Baier Motors, emphasizes the lack of suitable motorcycles for Africa and their commitment to meeting the diverse needs of African customers with their flexible platform.

The demand for personal mobility in Africa is soaring, with motorcycles being an ideal solution for transporting people and goods. Baier Motors aims to cater to this demand with its new motorcycle, which boasts a higher payload, robustness, reliability, and sustainability than its competitors. It also offers an affordable price and a distinctive design.

Baier Motors plans to distribute its motorcycle through independent local dealers, creating regional jobs. The company also seeks additional investors to tap into Africa’s large motorcycle market. The motorcycle’s design is by Italy’s Anyma Design, with most components sourced from Europe. Various German institutions, including the Afrika-Verein der deutschen Wirtschaft, The University of Kiel, The University of Aachen, and The University of Flensburg, support the project.

The African two-wheeler market is rapidly growing, driven by the need for personal mobility and the rise of motorcycle taxis. The market is expected to grow significantly, with Indian and Chinese two-wheelers being in high demand. While electric mobility levels in Africa are currently low, the shift towards electric two-wheelers is anticipated due to environmental and economic factors. The EDAG and Baier Motors project aims to cater to this shift by offering both ICE and EV options.
